ULTRA Magazine : Issue 3
Issue 3 of ULTRA is the best yet, a powerful collection of stories, photographs and illustrations that present our sport in a rich and welcoming way. The adventures in here are breathtaking and inspiring, with a potent mix of achievements that are reachable alongside that may be just out-of-reach by the mere mortals among us – for now at least. Robbie Britton and James Elson attempt run across Iceland in winter, a time when locals don’t even venture out for a walk. Gareth Hughes and Sarah Ridgway go Skyrunning in The Lakes, and face some of the worst weather ever seen in those parts. Damian Hall recalls what he has learned from two attempts at The Spine Race, and Shane Ohly describes his adventures in Kilian Jornet’s Tromsø Skyrace. There is an account of a 160-mile multi-day race run over 2,000 years ago in some inspirational locations and with extraordinary individuals, while others describe the tortuous peaks of the Bob Graham, the wild circumnavigation of Anglesey, and a long run down the A31 to Dorchester.
There’s so much more we want to tell you: Joe Faulkner’s warning about littering, Andy duBois’ compelling reason to never take another electrolyte, Karen Hathaway’s mental tricks to win a 250-mile race, a great interview with Centurion Boss James Elson after beating the record in one of his own races, a round-up of world achievements by GB runners, advice about nutrition, natural running form, the basics of navigation… and plenty more.
With ULTRA we can share stories of our adventures; the times when we explored new places and found out more about ourselves and our environment. We can show how we run free from the burdens of our everyday lives, living now and only now, the rhythmic movement of our limbs and the mesmeric movement of the headtorch glow as we run through the night. We can recall those times when we dug deep within ourselves to find new energy, new will to drive forward, ever closer to the finish. We can share the joys of running together, and of running alone, of laughing together and of those moments when only our own company is welcome.
The world of ULTRA invites you to explore. In all ultra races we find the same ingredients: adventure, freedom, endurance. The sense of community, of belonging. ULTRA is made by the community, for the community. By us, for us.
Ultras are >26.2, yes. But ULTRA is more than that. It’s where we go, where we push ourselves, where we find happiness. ULTRA is a celebration of adventure.
Let’s explore.
